The Pros and Cons of Free QuickBooks Online

December 12th, 2009

Like any other consumer I was interested in knowing exactly about free accounting software being offered by QuickBooks. An old finance professor of mine of an introductory finance course taught us the “no free lunch theorem”, which basically states that, there are no free lunches. I think what we have here, is a snack rather than a three course meal. This article will address the pros and cons of QuickBooks Online free version which was launched in October 2009.

Let me first begin by analyzing the pros before the cons concerning the QuickBooks Online free version software.

Some of the positive aspects are as follows: 1.Easy set up which includes numerous sample chart accounts for different companies in different industries. 2.It is web-based which provides anytime and anywhere access and includes automatic backups at the Intuit’s servers. 3.The ability to print expense checks. 4.Basic financial statements with some other supplemental reporting capabilities 5.iPhone compatible with read-only rights and the ability to invoice customers on the fly.

Some of the disadvantages are as follows: 1. Handles only five customers 2. Cannot use or generate Form 1099 3. Cannot generate statement of cash flows — this is important, since this financial statement illustrates the sources and uses of your business’s cash from the beginning of the year to the end of the year 4. Limited to only 1 user access and your accountant does not have free online Internet access 5. Lacks the ability to export to Excel

If you decide to use this software you will be using an abbreviated version of QuickBooks which is called QuickBooks Online Simple Start.

As mentioned above the setup is easy, though there is one aspect that merits a word of caution. The setup begins with a simple registration, filling in information about your company profile which includes choosing an industry, classifying your type of revenue as a customer, patient, client, , etc.. At the end of this process, Intuit requests some billing information, i.e. Credit card name and number which they clearly indicate that it will not be used unless you purchase the software. To Intuit’s defense this is very clear on their website after you press the submit icon you receive a receipt indicating that the cost is free.

In summary, unless you have a very small business with less than five customers or it’s not important to track revenue by customer, then this version of free accounting software might be suited for your purposes. In addition, another use of the software would be to perform a write up of the accounting transactions which generally occurs after the fact, which means it’s not used for real-time purposes. An example of a write up, is to prepare the year-end tax return or to prepare a financial statement long after the transactions have occurred.

QuickBooks Online Basic and QuickBooks Online Plus, provide you with a 30 day free period to test the software . Albeit, there is no expiration for the free use of the QuickBooks Online Simple Start, which makes it an attractive means to test or to use QuickBooks Online for more than 30 days. Generally speaking, 30 days is an insufficient time period to test the accounting software. Consequently, the option is to either utilize the 30 day free period offered by QuickBooks Online Basic and QuickBooks Online Plus, and if you require more than 30 days, then just purchase QuickBooks Online Basic for $9.95 a month or QuickBooks Online Plus for $34.95 a month. This is a viable option, since the software can be purchased on a monthly basis. The Intuit website clearly indicates “No contract, cancel anytime”.

One final note, is to involve your accountant in this decision process to determine the best QuickBooks version to meet your business needs.

Full HDTV Television

December 11th, 2009

Since the federal regulation of mandatory DTV (digital television) signal, the subject of full HDTV (full high definition television) has become a more popular topic of discussion and has become more of an interest to the public. With the digital changeover, now everyone has access to HDTV signal. However, an HDTV display is still necessary in order to view high definition no matter what type of signal you have (cable, antenna, or satellite).

The main advantage and interest in regards to HDTV is the high resolution. If you chose to go with an HD converter box, your television still has an analogue picture on a CRT screen. The resolution of an NTSC-analogue television is called 480i; the “i” meaning “interlaced”. This means that since there are only 240 horizontal lines available in the CRT tube and the TV camera has 480 lines, every other line is scanned at the same time for 1/60th of a second. Then the other lines are scanned. So, to portray a more vertical resolution, the TV signal is interlaced. With an aspect ratio of 4:3, the analogue TV resolution is 640 x 480i.

So how do HDTV and full HDTV differ from analogue TV? Certainly the most obvious feature is the resolution. Standard HDTV has a resolution of 720i or 720p and full HDTV has 1080i or 1080p. The ‘p’ signifies progressive scanning versus interlaced, i.e. all the vertical scans are done at the same time. With a 16:9 aspect ratio in HDTV this results in 1520 x 720 pixels for standard HDTV and 1920×1080 pixels for full HDTV.

It seems that the full HDTV (1080p) would be the most desirable product for optimum resolution and viewing pleasure. However, on televisions smaller than 42 inches in size, the difference in the standard HDTV versus the full HDTV isn’t visible. For this reason, full HDTV isn’t available on smaller TVs. Only standard HDTV (720i or 720p) is available. Hence, a 42 inch screen television or larger is required if you wish to get the benefit of full HDTV.

Three choices of screen technologies are available for full HDTV. These are rear projection HDTV, full HD plasma TV and full HD LCD TV. Rear projection HDTVs are still available but this technology appears on the decline with many manufactures dropping out of the market. Therefore, one is left with full HD plasma TV and full HD LCD TV to choose between. Since a resolution of 1080p is assumed, other factors affecting image quality to consider are response time and refresh rate, contrast ratio and color reproduction.

Full HDTV plasma screens have a broad range in color, are very bright, and can have very large screens. Display screens of full HDTV plasma TVs can be up to 58 inches in size. Since the display panel is only about 2.5 inches thick, the televisions are only about 4 to 6 inches thick. Though there are claims of contrast ratios as high as 100K in plasma TVs, the highest contrast currently available in stores is 30K. The response time is .001 milliseconds while the refresh frequencies are 600 Hz. The advantages of a plasma TV over an LCD are that the screen has a better color reproduction and also has a wider viewing angle. Because of the fast response time, plasma TVs are great for viewing fast moving film such as sports.

Of course full HDTV plasma is not perfect. The power requirements can be as high as 500 watts for some large screen versions and because the screen is made of glass, glare can be a problem. Plasma displays are heavier compared to their LCD counterparts but can be wall mounted.

Full HDTV LCD displays have the same resolution as plasma full HDTV displays, but the LCD displays have a slower response time (2 milliseconds). This could result in ghosting during fast moving images. The refresh frequency of an LCD display screen is 240 Hz, but the contrast ratio has been improved so that it’s the same as the plasma screen (30K). Though there are some differences in response time and refresh frequencies, LCD TVs are less expensive than plasmas.

With the exception of resolution, the other features, advantages and disadvantages of each of these types of TVs depends on what’s most important to you. In closing, if you have the extra money to spend, full HDTV is the optimum choice in TVs. When endeavouring in an entire home theatre, you should be sure that your full HDTV is compatible with the rest of the system.
