Trains In Seattle And The Inner Child

December 5th, 2009

Boys and girls of all ages like trains and train sets. They have played a very important role in the history of this country and Seattle, Washington and the Northwest in specific. In fact, the roles of trains in this part of the country have in the past been so vital that there are a few museums dedicated to them. Trains were essential lifelines for the people here for many years. While their importance seems to be dwindling in today’s society, their significance throughout the history of our country remains.

If you truly are a train enthusiast, then it should not be difficult to talk you into stopping by Seattle’s Train Center before and after touring the museums devoted to trains and their vital role in history. The Train Center offers a wide selection of model train parts and pieces that would make excellent additions to your train set or a great beginning for a train set for you or your kids.

After you’ve whetted your enthusiasm for trains and gotten your child all excited about them, it is time to take a walk back in time to the Northwest Railway Museum. There you can learn about railway history or even choose to take a ride on one of the trains that departs on several tours throughout the day. Most of the excursions are 65-75 minutes long and are a great treat for young and old alike. Perhaps the best thing about this museum is that its prime objective is to educate the public about the vital role that railroads had in the growth of this part of the country.

If you’re really interested in sharing your love for trains with the ones you love, you may consider taking a spin on the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train. This is a great way to not only get the experience of riding the rails but to take in some of the beautiful Washington scenery and have a gourmet meal in the process. During the months of November through to April up to two children may ride free with a paying adult.

There are certain restrictions on the type of seating, but it is a great way to get the event at a vastly reduced price. There are also special events such as Murder Mystery Trains and Magic and Illusion shows in addition to certain holiday events as well. Be sure to check out what is going on while you are visiting Seattle and see if this is something that might interest you and your family.

If you are up for a not so short drive to Pasco (approx. three and a half hours from Seattle), you might find the Washington State Railroads Historical Society Museum well worth the trip. Be sure to keep in mind that the museum is only open on Saturday and that the hours are limited so this is a journey you need to plan in advance. The best thing about this museum to me is the fact that there are lovely little stories, like the blackboard that recorded the first snowfall at the depot each year and others such as this.

It is the short stories that do not necessarily make history that do make lasting impressions and I am glad to see this particular story is being shared. Just remember, when visiting any of these depots, museums, and train tours that you definitely must bring your inner child with you in order to enjoy them as you should.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a lot of topics, but is presently involved with train sets for kids. If you would like to know more about train sets for kids, please go over to our website for some great offers.

Making Halloween Costumes From Cheap Cardboard Boxes

November 4th, 2009

You will see many this Halloween with expensive costumes. But it is hard to justify paying $70 for a costume that you will only wear once a year at best. So instead of wasting your money, start building your next Hallween costume from simple materials such as a basic cardboard box.

The cardboard you use is already probably in a rectangular shape- so making a car or vehicle is a natural solution! You can easily fashion the box into a vehicle by attaching two suspenders to both sides of the box, so that it can be worn if you cut a hole in the middle. Within 15 minutes, you can have a fully functional and decorated vehicle ready to wear immediately.

If you prefer a flashy costume, you can make a robot instead. A robot is seen as made up of metal, so the idea here is to make a shiny surface on the box. One way to do this is to use special types of spraypaint. You may also get tin foil instead, and carefully wrap the tin foil around the box and fasten it with tape.

Creativity is the name of the game, but so far only basic costumes have been described. You could make a costume to be like a tree using a cardboard box- and it’s probable you’ve never seen that before! The tree is harder to pull off, and you will need to make precise measurements. You can also decorate with real leaves, twigs, or bark to make the end result look more convincing.

The fascination of SpongeBob with small children is astounding. Also consider fashioning a half-cut box around the waste of the child. You can color in the box to look like the character’s suit and tie from the cartoon. You can then have the child wear a yellow SpongeBob shirt, which you can buy at most department stores. Small children will all love the reference and have fun spouting SpongeBob quotes.

If you feel up to the task, you can make a truly amazing Transformers outfit from a simple cardboard box. Some of the more intricate designs found on the Internet are created from multiple boxes, have been painted, and overall look like something any young boy would want to wear. It doesn’t get much cooler than walking around in a Transformers costume, and it’s not something you will find in stores.

Final Thoughts

The costume you ultimately decide on making is only going to be exceptional if you devote your full attention to it. If you don’t have time to do so, you may be better off just buying a Halloween costume from the Internet instead.

The Wonderful of Presents For Men

November 1st, 2009

Selecting presents for men need not be a daunting task. In this article we will focus on ideas for finding and selecting that great gift. The holiday season is just around the corner, so the time to get started is now… In future articles we will feature our TOP PICKS of unique and special gifts, but for now, let’s examine ways to find the perfect gift for that special guy.

What is the best way to ensure that you get something? Ask for it, right? So, given this principle, why not ask that guy on your gift list what they would like to receive? They might tell you outright, but more often than not they will evade the question. Just keep them talking, and listen intently to everything they say. When you come away from the conversation you will have some great ideas on what to get them. Be sure to write everything down when you get the chance…your memory will fade given time…

Consider the lifestyle of the guy on your list. Is he a workaholic who spends most of his time on the job? Is he a student who always seems to have his “nose in the books”. Is he a sports fan who is constantly glued to the television? A party animal who loves to dance the night away? A health food purist who knows where to get the best organic produce? Often the lifestyle a guy has will determine what they would like to receive in terms of a present.

When someone is rich they can pretty well go out and get whatever they want. You might want to take a more personal approach and make something for him. Would he like to receive some baked goods made from your own hands? If you are good at woodwork or sewing or painting, he might like to see some of your handy work. Anything that you make yourself will tell him that you cared enough about him to invest your time.

What sort of a relationship do you have with this guy? If you know him very well you might want to get him something that is more personal. If you only know him casually, this sort of gift would be inappropriate. Consider what type of gift that you would feel comfortable getting from him. This will often give you a guideline on how to proceed.

Does this guy have a particular hobby? Gifts that compliment a hobby are often wonderful to give and receive. Even if you know nothing about this hobby, you can always do a bit of homework and find out more. Why not post a question on the internet, or call your local hobby store, and ask them what a good gift would be? People always love to talk about their hobbies and would be more than happy to help you out.

We hope that this article has provided you with some great ideas on how to choose great presents for men. In our next article we will be offering our TOP PICKS. If you can’t wait, please navigate over to our blog to learn more.
