Wireless TV Headphones – Ideal For Late Night TV Watching

December 13th, 2009

What’s the story with wireless TV headphones? They seem to be increasingly popular these last few years. Well, it’s helpful to know that there are a couple of different types and that they can be really convenient for most people. Their quality has also improved greatly these last several years. There are a couple of different pieces of equipment related to these headphones, too.

Usually, when you’re thinking about buying a set of headphones like this you’ll need to realize that there is a transmitter unit that runs the signal from the TV to a set of headphones. Also, there are two different types of headphones. The first type relies upon radio frequency — sometimes abbreviated “RF” — and it is the current popular version of these headphones.

RF television headphone units give a person complete freedom to move about the house with these headphones on and while listening to their television programs. They do not depend on line of sight, in other words, to receive the television’s signal. The other type, which is known as an infrared, or IR, unit uses that infrared signal to beam data to the headphones. These headphones DO require line of sight.

With infrared technology, wireless TV headphones must generally be within a certain line of sight to the television set which is sending the infrared signal to the wireless headphones. This also means that these headphones will not pick up the television signal audio output if a person wearing these headphones leaves the room where the television set is at.

For someone who has a hard time hearing and can’t turn the TV on full blast, having a set of wireless TV headphones can be a great solution. TV headphones are also a way to preserve harmony in the bedroom if you like to watch TV before going to sleep, but your partner doesn’t. By muting the sound, your partner can sleep without having to hear the TV all night.

Most wireless TV headphones are relatively inexpensive when compared to other audio type equipment. The cheaper ones, though, aren’t very well noted for their sound quality. On the other hand, there are some really nice units out there that run a few dollars more that can deliver better sound quality. Some even work with home theater setups and can offer a surround sound effect.

What’s for certain, is that improvements in technology over the years means that a person wearing a set of wireless TV headphones can do just about anything he or she likes while listening to the television as loud as he or she likes all without disturbing any other people in the room. The only thing that might present a problem is that some wireless TV headphones may not work with a plasma TV set, so you should check first.

Adding Midi Files to your Webpage

December 12th, 2009

Large music files can cause a webpage to load slowly. Using midi files for background music on a webpage can solve this problem

How do I put midi files on my page? is a question I frequently receive. The code I use to embed midi files on some of my web pages is: EMBED src=”midifile.mid” width=145 height=30 autostart=true loop=true surrounded by brackets

In the example, the midi file (midifile.mid) is the name of the midi file you have saved on your server. Width and height determine the size of the media player displayed on the page. If you do not want a player to display on your web page but want the music to play, use a width and height of 1 or 2 (0 width and height sometimes causes problems with some players).

autostart=true means the file will play automatically when the page loads. autostart=false would not start the file automatically

loop=true causes the file to play and loop, loop=false plays a file once.

You can play midi files in Internet Explorer, or other browsers. You can also select which program will play the midi file. In Internet Explorer, this is controlled by the “Programs” tab (under “Tools”, then “Internet Options”). Go to Internet Programs/Set Programs/Associate a File Type or protocol with a program/. In that displayed list of file extensions, look for “.mid or .midi” in the “Name” column. You can see the “Current Default” column and choose what program will be used when you click on a MIDI file on a www page.

Some midi files are “zipped” files to make then easy to download. If you are using “Winzip”, or another file zip utility program the zipped file can be played without a lot of trouble. Make sure your unzip program is the default application to open .zip files. Then, you just click the mid file when your unzip program show the contents, and it plays!

Also, If you set up your Helper Apps to “play” the midi song when selected with a particular program, you can always save it (download it) instead of playing it by right clicking on a file and choosing the “Save Target as” to save the file to your hard drive. That way, you don’t have to delete your “Helper apps” entry for .mid files if you want to save it or have to hunt through your Temporary Internet Files directory, to find the file (which might have a temp name, like “GK8DETHN” or something)
