Barbara’s boyfriend (Albright) is an interrogator who makes Communists talk. This is a definitely a new twist. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Young, Hardie Albright, Cliff Edwards, Ruth Donnelly, and Gordon Jones. (78 minutes, 1935)
The Education of Sonny Carson: Fascinating if overemotional drama of disobedient black youth in Brooklyn of the ’50s and ’60s. Based on Carson’s autobiography, the film takes on extra meaning with consideration to his notoriety on the N.Y.C scene. Cast includes Rony Familyton, Don Gordon, Joyce Stroller, and Paul Benjamin. (105 minutes, 1974)
The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe: This is a witty re-creation of Lily Tomlin’s 1985 one female Broadway show. Her characterizations run the gamut from box woman to juvenile delinquent to New Age Lady, with much of the material in a feminist vein. The show stars Lily Tomlin obviously. (120 minutes, 1991)
The Vows: Astronomically pleasing story of an ambitious youthful Dubliner who takes on the task of constructing and managing a band made up of other Dubliners who harmonize ’60s-type music! Disarmingly involving from the word go, with charismatic cast of unknowns, and the film is filled with irresistible music. This film is truly a genuine treat. Cast includes Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Dave Finnegan, Bronagh Gallagher, Felim Gormley, Glen Hansard, Dick Massey, Johnny Murphy, Kenneth McCluskey, Andrew Hefty, and Colm Meaney. (117 minutes, 1991)
The Great Moment: Perplexed biography of anesthesia pioneer wavers from comedy to drama. The film is uselessly filled with aggravating flashbacks. Cast includes Joel McCrea, Harry Carey, William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, Gmdy Sullon, and Louis Jean Heydt. (83 minutes, 1944)
A Nightmare on Elm Street the Dream Child: Fifth iin the Freddy Crugar series with everyone with the exception of Englund just going through the paces. Here, scarred, dream haunting Freddy Krueger (Englund) uses the unborn child of Wilcox to strike at her buddies. As typical, visual effects are a highlight however don’t spare the film from being a bore. Cast includes Englund, Lisa Wilcox, Kelly Jo Minter, Erika Anderson, Whitby Hertford, and Danny Hassel. (89 minutes, 1989)
Alfie Darling: Forgettable continuation to Alfie, with Cost a most insufficient substitute for Michael Caine. This time around our idol falls for a fashionable publication editor. Cast includes Alan Cost, Jill Townsend, Joan Collins, Annie Ross, Sheila White, and Rula Lenska. (102 minutes, 1975)
Sugar Cane Alley: Beautifully made, heart felt drama in regards to an 11 year old boy and his all sacrificing nana, getting by in a Martinique shantytown throughout the 1930s. The film is a humanist drama of the highest request. Cast includes Precious Legitimus, Garry Cadenat, Routa Seck, Joby Bernabe, and Francisco Charles. (107 minutes, 1984)
