Indie Rock Ruled the Decade

November 10th, 2009 by Tom Callahan Leave a reply »

As we close out a decade, it’s safe to say that the rock world was defined by the indie rock movement. What started out at the beginning of the decade on the heels of the success of bands like The Strokes, the White Stripes, and others, has turned into an entire genre all in its own.

It’s unique to see the longevity of the indie movement when you consider other recent music genres that had shorter life spans. Whether it was new wave or heavy metal in the 80s, or alternative rock in the 90s, none of them were as big for as long as indie rock this past decade, let alone as expansive.

Bands like The Strokes, Wilco, The White Stripes, and many others quickly made a footprint in the music scene as the decade began. Their lack of regard for a mainstream sound was welcomed by music critics and fans alike.

What exactly is indie rock? Technically speaking, it denotes any band that isn’t tied to a corporate music label, but one could also point to the style of music. There are many bands that have since signed with major labels, but they’re still considered a part of the indie rock movement.

Most would agree that indie rock bands make their music with the goal of making great music. This is a breath of fresh air in a world that was dominated by songs specifically engineered for top 40 radio for way too long.

If this is the case, indie music might be at the forefront of the music scene for quite some time. Artists continue to expand their sounds, testing limits that have never been tested before.

This is a great thing for music fans, as the wide variety of creative music is really a pleasure to all with an interest in music. It should be interesting to see where things continue to go from here as they evolve.

The last decade was definitely dominated by indie rock. I’d usually wonder what the next decade will bring, but my money’s on further evolution of the indie genre. What a great thing that would be.
