Seat belts are also popularly known as safety belts. Essentially it is a safety strap designed to protect the occupant of a vehicle against injurious movement that may outcome from collision or a sudden halt. Apart from wide-ranging occupant restraint system, seat belts are likely to reduce the risk of getting wounded by stopping the occupant from hitting hard interior elements of the vehicle or other occupants and by safeguarding the occupant from being thrown out of the vehicle. There are different types of seat belts that are used in vehicles.

Lap Belts

These belts are adjustable strap that go over the waist. They are often used in older cars. These belts are now rare apart from some rear middle seats. But passenger’s aircraft seats use these lap seat belts.

Sash Belts

These belts are adjustable strap that goes over the shoulder. They were primarily used in the 60’s models. But these have partial benefit because it is very easy to slip out of in a crash and are not secured.

Lap and Sash Seat Belts

Lap and sash belts are a mishmash of the above seat belts but come in two separate belts. They were largely used in the’60s and’70s and are in general obsolete by three-point design.

Three-point Seat Belts

Three-point seat belt is related to the lap and sash types but carries one single uninterrupted length of webbing. However, both three-point and lap-and-sash belts aid to spread out the energy of the moving body in an accident over the shoulders, chest, and pelvis.

Five point harnesses Seat Belts

A five point harnesses seat belts are safer but more preventive seat belts. They are in general found in child safety seats and in racing cars. However in this type of seat belts, the lap portion is associated to a belt between the legs and there are two shoulder belts, making a total of five points of connection to the seat.

Six-point harnessesSeat Belts

These type of seat belts became much well-liked after Dale Earnhardt died during a NASCAR race when he was wearing a five-point harness and was crashed to death. It was measured at first that his belt had broken then some teams ordered a six-point harness. Now the sixth point has two belts linking the legs but still some experience to a weaker point than the other parts.

Inertia reel

Today most of the folks prefer these seat belts and are most universally used and are efficiently self-adjusting, which perks up efficacy. They also pull back when not in use, reducing the probability of damage to the belts. A retractor reel lets out the strap or pulls it back as required, and in the happening of an accident the reel locks, preventing any more straps to come out and holding the passenger in the car. However these days there are Automatic Seat Belts that usually have shoulder belts that mechanically move forward to protect the passenger when the vehicle is started. These automatic seat belts basically come in two types: Manual lap belt with automatic shoulder belt and Automatic Shoulder and Lap Belts
