Sugar Town – Compelling mosaic of LA life characterizing a handful of characters whose lives dovetail – a musician hopeful who will do anything to get ahead, an uptight lone woman who allures the inappropriate men like a magnet, and a band made up of cleaned-up ’80s rock megastars, to name a few. Made on a shoestring, although sharp and well recognized; first-rate cast contains a variety of actual musicians. Cast includes Ally Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor, Jade Gordon, Michael Des Barres, Lucinda Jenney, and Martin Kemp. (92 minutes,’99)

The General Died at Dawn – Fine performance of Oriental intrigue, with mercenary Cooper falling in love with foreign agent Carroll when fighting sinister warlord Tamiroff. Cast Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Akim Tamiroff, Dudley Digges, Porter Chamber, and William Frawley. (97 minutes,’36)

Rent-a-Kid – While the person in charge of an orphanage takes a holiday, father Nielsen takes over with a idea to make money by renting out kids. While unsurprising, this stupid storyline is astoundingly effective. Eventually 3 youngsters are rented by a hip ’90s couple thinking about adopting. A decent family flick. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Matt McCoy, Sherry Miller, and Amos Crawley. (89 minutes,’95)
