The aim of every Hollywood producer is to put out a motion picture that is a gigantic hit. The combination of a magnificent story line with exceptional stars and special effects seems to be the formula for a smash hit. Still, it does not always work and now and again even when a motion picture has all of the components that supposedly make a hit, it still fails at the box office. There is no sure formula for a Hollywood winner.
Lantana – Heartbreaking, adult premise of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
La Petit Lili – A family’s country house is charged with sentiment while the hotheaded child, a yearning film maker actor, finds that his lady friend is mesmerized with his mom’s boyfriend, a triumphant head of films. Dazzling film empowered by Chekhov’s The Seagull, investigating the line between art and life, and how the 2 influence each other. Cast includes Nicole Garcia, Bernard Giraudeau, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Ludivine Sagnier, Robinson Steveniu, Julie Depardieu, Yves Jacques, and Michel Piccoli. (104 minutes, 2003)
The Seniors – 4 collegians open a bogus sex hospital, which mushrooms into a multi million dollar business. The movie is alternately stupid and sarcastic, with some harmless nudity thrown in. Cast includes Jeffrey Byron, Gary Imhof, Dennis Quaid, Lou Richards, PrisciIla Barnes, Alan Reed, Edward Andrews, Robert Emhardl, and Alan Hewitt. (87 minutes,’78)
Sexy Beast – A retired British hoodlum, living the life in Spain, is visited by a violent gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has admirable acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malicious perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)
Fantasies – Amateurish nonsense in regards to Derek’s and Hooten’s attempts to turn a Greek island into a tourist trap. Shot in’73, while Bo was sixteen. Cast includes Bo Derek, Peter Hooten, Anna Alexiadis, Phaedon Gheorghitis, and Therese Bohlin. (81 minutes,’81)
